Joe Cole Claims Xabi Alonso Is Furious With Chelsea Board After Brentford Defeat
Joe Cole believes Xabi Alonso sent a strong message to the Chelsea board during the Blues’ disappointing 3-0 defeat to Brentford, with the decision to introduce 16-year-old Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli highlighting concerns over the club’s midfield depth.
Chelsea’s difficult start to the Premier League season took another worrying turn on Friday night as they suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat away to Brentford.
The result has already sparked fresh questions about Chelsea’s defensive problems, squad depth and the options available to new head coach Xabi Alonso, particularly in midfield.
However, former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole believes there was another important message hidden in Alonso’s substitutions at the Gtech Community Stadium.
With Chelsea trailing Brentford late in the match, Alonso turned to academy midfielder Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli, who was only 16 years old at the time.
For Cole, the decision was not simply about giving a young player valuable experience.
He believes it was a clear indication that Alonso does not feel he has enough senior midfield options available to him.
Joe Cole claims Alonso sent a message to Chelsea board
Speaking after the match, Joe Cole suggested that Alonso’s decision to bring Nicoll-Jazuli into the game was a message directed towards the Chelsea hierarchy.
Cole argued that putting a 16-year-old midfielder into a Premier League match while Chelsea were chasing the game showed the lack of experienced options available to the manager.
According to Cole, Alonso was effectively showing the board that his squad did not have enough depth in midfield.
Cole also interpreted Alonso’s reaction at full-time as evidence of his frustration.
It is important to stress, however, that “furious” is Joe Cole’s interpretation of Alonso’s mood, rather than a direct public statement from the Chelsea manager.
Why Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli’s introduction attracted attention
The introduction of Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli was one of the biggest talking points from Chelsea’s defeat.
The teenager had already impressed during pre-season and had been given opportunities around the first team. Chelsea’s official website has highlighted his progress through the academy and his involvement with Alonso’s squad during the summer.
Before the Brentford match, Nicoll-Jazuli had been named among the substitutes for the first time in a competitive Chelsea game.
He eventually entered the match with Chelsea already two goals behind.
That made the decision particularly significant because Alonso still had other senior players available on the bench, including Romeo Lavia.
Cole’s argument is therefore that the decision demonstrated just how limited Alonso’s midfield choices had become.
Chelsea’s midfield situation has changed dramatically
Chelsea’s midfield options have changed considerably since last season.
The club completed the sale of Enzo Fernández to Manchester City for £125 million, with the transfer completed in September. Reuters reported that the move was a British record-equalling deal and reunited Fernández with former Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca at Manchester City.
Chelsea also allowed Andrey Santos to join Manchester United during the summer transfer window. The Premier League confirmed the move in July.
Those departures have left Alonso having to work with a significantly different midfield group.
Chelsea’s attempt to bring in Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara also reportedly collapsed late in the transfer window, further complicating the situation.
That has now become a major talking point following the Brentford defeat.
Alonso started Jordan Henderson and Valentin Barco
The midfield situation was particularly noticeable against Brentford.
With Moises Caicedo and Reece James unavailable, Alonso selected experienced former Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson alongside Valentin Barco.
Henderson, who is 36, was making his Chelsea debut against the club he represented last season.
Chelsea’s official team news confirmed that Romeo Lavia, Jorrel Hato and Malo Gusto were among the players on the bench, while Nicoll-Jazuli was also included among the substitutes.
Chelsea ultimately struggled to find the control and creativity needed to turn the game around.
The decision to introduce Nicoll-Jazuli therefore became symbolic of a wider squad-depth conversation.
The Brentford defeat adds more pressure
Chelsea’s 3-0 defeat was not simply a disappointing result.
The performance raised more questions about how quickly Alonso can build his preferred team and whether he has enough experienced players in key areas to implement his ideas consistently.
The Blues went into the match hoping to respond after previous disappointing results, but Brentford punished Chelsea in the second half.
The defeat also continued Chelsea’s defensive concerns early in the season, with the team conceding multiple goals in each of its Premier League matches so far, according to reporting following the Brentford game.
For Alonso, the challenge is now to find solutions with the players currently available.
What does this mean for Xabi Alonso and Chelsea?
The biggest question is whether Chelsea’s current midfield options are enough for Alonso to compete consistently across the Premier League and other competitions.
The manager has several midfield possibilities, but injuries and player availability have already made selection difficult.
Caicedo’s absence has been particularly important, while Reece James has also been used in midfield during Alonso’s early games.
With Enzo Fernández and Andrey Santos no longer available, the manager has fewer established options than he would have expected at the beginning of the campaign.
That is why Nicoll-Jazuli’s appearance against Brentford has attracted so much attention.
The teenager’s involvement could be viewed positively as an example of Alonso trusting Chelsea’s academy, but Cole believes the timing of the substitution also exposed a weakness in the first-team squad.
Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli could now become one to watch
Despite the circumstances surrounding his introduction, Nicoll-Jazuli’s involvement is an important milestone for the young midfielder.
Chelsea have already been impressed by his development, and Alonso gave him significant minutes during pre-season.
The club’s official report on his development noted that he played against experienced players during pre-season, including Juventus midfielders Manuel Locatelli and Douglas Luiz, while Alonso praised the teenager’s ability to compete despite his age.
His Premier League involvement could therefore become an important part of his development.
However, Chelsea supporters will hope the club does not become overly dependent on teenagers because of a lack of senior options.
Chelsea now face a major midfield question
The Brentford defeat has brought Chelsea’s midfield depth firmly back into the spotlight.
The departures of Enzo Fernández and Andrey Santos, combined with the failed attempt to complete another midfield signing, have left Alonso with difficult decisions to make.
Joe Cole believes Alonso’s decision to use Nicoll-Jazuli was a clear message to the Chelsea board.
Whether Alonso actually intended the substitution as a message to the hierarchy is something only the Chelsea manager himself can confirm.
What is clear is that Chelsea now have a significant midfield question to answer.
Can Alonso find a solution with his current squad?
Can players such as Caicedo and Lavia stay fit and provide the necessary depth?
And will Chelsea’s young academy players continue to receive opportunities when experienced options are unavailable?
For now, the Brentford defeat has made those questions impossible to ignore.
